The fashion industry is harming our planet’s pre

The fashion industry is harming our planet’s precious biodiversity.
Our current fashion system is throwing our delicate ecosystems out of balance through the use of toxic chemicals and dyes, and incorrectly disposing of wastewater throughout the supply chain. The textile industry’s use of hazardous chemicals has even contributed to rivers being declared “biologically dead” due to untreated effluent entering them (International Labour Organisation, 2021).

A lack of transparency around fashion brands’ environmental output is allowing this to happen. The Fashion Transparency Index 2022 finds that only 11% of brands publish their supplier wastewater test results, despite the textile industry being a leading contributor to water pollution. Brands must trace their entire supply chain to address long-lasting social and environmental impacts of water pollution on the surrounding natural environments, so those causing this damage can be held accountable.
